“I aim to misbehave.”
- Captain Mal Reynolds
Here’s How It Is…
The Earth got used up. We found a new solar system and used terraforming technology to create hundreds of new Earths. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided that all worlds should unite under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point.
After the War for Unification, many Independents–those who fought and lost–drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out on the Rim, people struggle to get by with the most basic technologies. Out here a ship will bring you work. A gun will help you keep it.
A captain’s goal is simple: Find a crew. Find a Job. Keep flyin’.
Strap your gun and grab your duster, cause there’s gonna be a showdown in space.

Firefly: Hurtlin’ Through the ‘Verse – An AGE System RPG (PDF; 3.3 MB)
Editor’s Note: The AGE System continues to prove its versatility with this homebrewed conversion of the cowboys-in-space series Firefly. I came across Mike’s idea on the Green Ronin Dragon Age RPG Forums and saw it take shape over a number of posts and weeks. One of the reasons it called my attention was that it was a sci-fi treatment of the rules engine, something that a lot of people have commented AGE would do well but we have yet to see.
Mike’s work with the Firefly conversion to AGE is neat; he found interesting ways to keep rules to a minimum, using the simplistic elegance of the system to his advantage. I especially like the optional Psychic talents and the Ships rules as examples of paring things down to the most elemental components needed to get the game going, and appreciate a lot the new names for Stunts, which completely embrace the space cowboys atmosphere. I’m sure that with play and further rules this will be revised, but it is a nice addition to the AGE System fan’s library and toolbox.
Enjoy and have a happy GM’s Day!

I’ve worked really hard on it and yes there is still much much more to come! I really found a muse on this and ideas just pour out of me.

Hopefully Mike will read this. I’m really stoked to see what he’s done here, not only because it shows the flexibility of the AGE System but because I’ve been a serious Firefly fan from day one but didn’t really have the time or energy (or money) to get into Serenity.
I haven’t had a chance to plow too deeply into the text yet, but I did notice that there was no background for Companions, and they don’t show up as a class or specialization. That seemed like a really huge omission, so I was wondering if that was in the works or if I’m missing something obvious (not an unlikely proposition, mind you).

Michael, I am sure Mike will see your comment and reply soon. Thanks for bringing that up.

Heyya. Thanks for the praise Michael. Companions are actually in there. They are a Talent. I debated making them a background or a specialization as well. In the end I decided that a talent worked best since you can take it at level 1.
Specializations don’t start till level 6 and I felt that was just too far down the road since Companion training starts at childhood. While a background may have worked, it’s too passive. Aside from a ability raise or a focus it doesn’t provide anything except for flavor.
Talents, with it’s ladder of Novice, Journeyman, and Master there is degrees of how “good” of a companion you are and etc. Thus that is why I went the direction I did.
