Kobold Quarterly has put out an open call for adventures for the AGE System to be published in the magazine. The info below appeared in a recent Kobold Courier mailing and is official.

AGE Authors Wanted!

Open Design wants to expand its coverage of the AGE System, to include a second adventure in Kobold Quarterly.  

Query koboldquarterly@gmail.com (with [KQ AGE Query] in the email header) if you have a 2800-4000-word AGE adventure idea suitable for the magazine. Midgard adventures are welcome! Additionally, Open Design needs designers skilled in converting Pathfinder RPG material to AGE. We have 3 adventures needing such attention. Query the email above and include [AGE Conversion] in your email header.

AGE News Blast: Developers, Backgrounds, Horror and Felicia Day

There’s been a number of news items since the last post, so let’s go ahead and get them out shotgun-style!

New Dragon Age RPG Developer

Green Ronin has just announced that Will Hindmarch is the new Developer for the Dragon Age RPG! From their post:

Will Hindmarch is our new Dragon Age Developer. He has been working professionally in the game industry for the last decade. Will is an experienced developer, having run both White Wolf’sVampire: The Requiem line and Atlas Games’ Feng Shui line. He contributed to our Family Games: The 100 Best book and has done freelance work for companies such as Wizards of the Coast, Pelgrane Press, and Turbine. His first task will be helping us getDragon Age Set 3 finished, approved, and released.

We at the Dragon Age Oracle welcome Will with open arms and loaded Dragon Dice. You can find Will online at his website or as @wordwill on Twitter.

[Review] Midgard Bestiary for AGE

Open Design has just released the Midgard Bestiary, a collection of 50 monsters from their own Midgard setting, brought into the AGE System.

Bestiary PDF bought and read. I shall now attempt a review.

First off the layout. It’s really nice and simple. Each creature has a nice chunky stat block which takes up usually around half a page, the other half being taken up with creature fluff and description and a nice piece of artwork. Apart from the great looking cover there’s only a spattering of colour within the book, which is fine because I assume those who would print it would print in black and white. So you won’t miss much.

The artwork itself is nice. Generally strong throughout. Some pieces have clearly had more time put into them than others but there is something fitting about the sketch-like look of the less complete pieces. That isn’t to say you’re looking at an unfinished stick man; all the pieces serve to give you a strong idea of how the creatures should look.

Midgard Patrons to Playtest 50 New AGE System Monsters

When the patrons of the ongoing Midgard Campaign Setting project from Open Design were asked to pick what game systems they wanted to see supported, many of us involved hoped but never really believed one of those systems would be the Dragon Age Role Playing Game. It was chosen, however, and since that happened project patrons who play the game have been working overtime to make the Midgard campaign a welcome home for our DA games. New backgrounds have been drafted and new monsters have been brought into the AGE system. A lot of the buzz about the project has been about opening up a new world to AGE system gaming, which most of the visitors to this site probably agree is a fun, fast paced system that blends old school sensibilities with modern mechanics, but not everyone is as excited by the lack of options in game worlds.

The latest side project to have developed out of this quest to provide game masters and players everything they need to run AGE system games in Midgard is the development of a new book of monsters native to the setting. A playtest of 50 new AGE system monsters launched last week only for Midgard patrons. The book collects five years of Open Design creatures, drawn from both adventures and gazetteers. One of the winning monsters from last month’s March Monster Madness contest right here at the Dragon Age Oracle, the Young Cave Dragon, is a perfect example of a brute that had long lived within the Midgard world but only recently was made available to AGE players. Patrons are even now testing their mettle against foes such as the Eye Golem, Bonepowder Ghoul, Weaving Spider and Gypsosphinx. The playtest will only be open for a short time so that we can get the book into your hands as quickly as possible.

[March Monster Madness] Dragon and Young Cave Dragon

As promised, here are the entries for the winners of the March Monster Madness AGE Monster Design Challenge.

Dragon

Dragon’s are huge, powerful and intelligent creatures whose territory spans about the same area powerful human lord. Dragons prefer to dwell in the mountains, far away from large human cities. They have been known to demand tribute from any small human communities it considers within its domain.

It combat the dragon has the fighting strength of a small army. With its terrible swiftness and superior size and strength, the dragon dominates the battlefield. With its armor impregnable to nearly all forms of archery, it can fly across the battlefield searching for the leaders of the opposing army. The dragon snatches the leaders, flies high and drops the lifeless burnt bodies back onto the troops. Soon even the most fervent army’s moral breaks and they rout.

[March Monster Madness] And The Winner Is…

March has come and gone. Eleven monsters entered the arena and now two are crowned kings in the March Monster Madness challenge.

It was a close battle between the blood-sucking Stirge and the fire-breathing Dragon, but at the end, the iconic winged lizard easily claimed the top spot with 29.87% of the votes.

Midgard Monster

The battle here was between the Clockwork Myrmidon and the Young Cave Dragon, but in the end, once again, the iconic dragon claimed the top spot to be crowned king with 34.38% of the votes.

Prince of Midgard: An Interview with Wolfgang Baur

Wolfgang Baur, Kobold-in-Chief at Kobold Quarterly magazine, has launched the newest Open Design project, the complete campaign setting of Midgard. Among the rules sets being considered for this massive undertaking we find the popular staples of Pathfinder and Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition, and a scrappy newcomer to the scene, the AGE System, the engine which powers the Dragon Age RPG. Not only that, AGE has surprised everyone by becoming one of the most popular choices among the patrons!

I’ve been a fan of Open Design since their second project, Castle Shadowcrag (geek boast alert: my one contribution as a patron to that project? I was the one who suggested to Wolfgang the name of the Shadow Fey, scathsidhe), and Midgard had already called my attention even before I read that another of my favorite designers, Jeff Grubb, would be a part of it, and that the AGE System was a possibility in terms of rules for the game world.

With all this in mind, I shot Wolfgang an email with some questions and he was gracious enough to take the time to answer them for the readers of the Dragon Age Oracle. Let’s see what the Prince of Midgard has to say.

Wolfgang Baur To Launch New Setting, Possibly For Dragon Age

Industry veteran, Open Design pioneer and Kobold Quarterly Kobold-In-Chief Wolfgang Baur has announced the newest, most ambitious Open Design project to date, the launch of their very own campaign setting, Midgard.

Anyone familiar with Open Design or Kobold Quarterly has already seen glimpses of this world in the form of Zobeck, the city in which a lot of the articles and adventures published by this group are set. With Midgard, we will get to see the rest of the world, and considering Wolfgang’s excellent track record, not to mention his fantastic imagination for creating worlds just perfect for the needs of the fantasy roleplaying milieu,is one project that’s sure to garner a lot of attention. Did I mention he also brought in Brandon Hodge and Jeff Grubb as co-designers?

Of particular interest to this audience is this sentence under the heading of Project Launch (underlined emphasis mine):

The world will be shaped for the systems that patrons prefer: that means OGL and Pathfinder RPG and 4E Dungeons & Dragons, of course, but it might also mean using the AGE system from the Dragon Age RPG.

I was already intrigued by the idea; when I got to that sentence, I whipped out my wallet.

I would love to see a new campaign setting designed for the AGE System, if only to see how the system would work outside of Dragon Age. As someone who has already started tinkering with AGE to create things beyond Dragon Age, this would be not only an opportunity to see others designing in that space, but someone who is a master at the craft of game design no less. Yeah, I’m excited.

Fans of Dragon Age and the AGE System, we have a chance here to vote with our wallets to support the development and creation of new material for the game we like. I hope you will all join me in letting Wolfgang know what we’d like to see in Midgard.
